2025 Exploring Effective Practice Awards
EEP awards pay for teacher release and travel to enable teachers to visit other colleagues to gather, share and discuss ideas, pedagogy and resources for the language classroom. These awards are funded through our Networks of Expertise (NEX) funding from the Ministry of Education.
There are five EEP awards available in 2025. The award covers one day of relief (TRD) to visit another teacher(s) of your language. Please note that the award must be taken over one day, not split into half days.
Teachers may also apply for funding to cover travel costs (reimbursement of petrol costs, airfares, accommodation and/or airport transfers where applicable). TRD costs may be invoiced directly to NZALT, and other approved expenses will be reimbursed on receipt of proof of payment.
Priority will be given to applicants who:
- are first or second-year teachers or new to teaching a language
- are first-time HoDs/HoFs
- teach in geographically isolated areas
- teach a language which has limited resourcing
- provide a clear rationale for applying
The deadline for 2025 EEP applications is Friday, 30 May. The award must be used by Friday, 31 October.
Please apply for this award here.
For more information, contact Annabelle Sinclair
Focus groups to review the new draft curriculum
Thank you to everyone who expressed interest in being part of a focus group to review the new curriculum. We will pass on the expressions of interest to the MoE by Friday this week. We are not sure if you will be contacted by the MoE or if they will ask the subject associations to contact the candidates they have chosen, but either way we will be in touch. If you are not chosen this time, there are likely to be more opportunities to provide feedback and review the new the curriculum, so please do put up your hand!
NZQA Assessor Support - Please read this message carefully
NZQA Assessor Support - Please read this message carefully
NZQA offers a range of Internal Assessment resources to support language teachers. In 2025 this includes resources for the new Level 1 standards.
To see the range of support offered, go to your subject specific page on the NZQA website. On the NZQA homepage, go to the Subjects ad scroll down to the bottom to select your language.
Once on your subject page, scroll down through the page to see links to various important language documents. At the top of this page, there is a link to the Assessor support page. This page outlines all the resources that are available to you. This includes a link ‘Events and Presentations’ which is where you will go if you are organising an event and would like to request Moderator support.
On this website, there is also a link Online courses and modules for assessors. This will show you all the online modules currently available and explain how to access Pūtake, the NZQA learning management system. At the bottom of the opening subject page, under the ‘Assessor support materials for internal assessment’ section, you will find links to various resources. Among these are links to:
- Exemplars
- Clarifications documents for levels 2 and 3 (these have been updated with the changes to the 2025 Conditions of Assessment)
- The National Moderators report. This summarises what was seen in 2024 moderation
- Webcasts – in here, you will find a Webcast on the 1.2 standard which clarifies the standard requirement around events and experiences
- Pūtake – which has online Modules for Languages
Currently, the following online modules are available for Languages:
Generic to all languages:
- The Interact standards Levels 1-3
- Unpacking the Level 1 Communication standard.
Assessor Practice Tool:
- Level 1 – French, German and Spanish. Other languages to follow.
- Level 2 – French, German and Spanish. Other languages to follow.
- Level 3 – look out for these coming in 2025
Making Assessor Judgements - Module for French 91119 and 91547
It is important to keep checking on both the subject page and Pūtake as resources will be added throughout the year.
MoE Learning Languages updates
Assessment Events and Feedback
The assessment event refers to the time when students are actively producing language, following the introduction of the standard and each assessment opportunity.
- For writing assessments: This includes drafting and editing writing pieces. After each assessment event, teachers will collect or restrict access to student drafts. A dedicated session may be provided for students to select and refine their initial and subsequent drafts before final submission.
- For interaction assessments, this involves engaging in the actual interaction—for example, individually brainstorming possible questions and answers, and recording the conversation.
- Teacher involvement during the assessment event is limited to providing students with support on the technical aspects of their work only, for example, audio or visual quality. Assessors must not provide feedback on student language.
- Teachers may support students' understanding of the standard and the achievement criteria outside each assessment event. However, feedback and feedforward must not focus on the language itself.
TKI Assessment Activities - Updated Learning Languages Level 2 and Level 3 Conditions of Assessment
The updated NCEA Level 2 and Level 3 Conditions of Assessment (CoAs) for all languages were published on TKI in January 2025.
The new Level 2 and Level 3 CoAs include the following changes:
- Exclusion of teacher feedback and the use of generative AI
- Added requirement for an authenticity statement.
‘A’ versions of Internal Assessment Activities (Assessment resources) on TKI have been updated to reflect these changes.
‘B’ versions of Internal Assessment Activities will be updated for use in 2026.
The updated CoAs must be applied to ALL internal assessment activities - A and B versions - from 2025.
Vocabulary Lists for Pacific Languages
The updated NCEA Level 1 and new Level 2 and Level 3 vocabulary lists for Pacific Languages are now available on the NCEA and NZQA websites for use from 2025.
The vocabulary lists help teachers and students understand the language expectations for each level, as outlined in The New Zealand Curriculum. They support teachers to understand the language that is appropriate at different curriculum levels for language learners, and what students are required to recognise for external assessments.
The Level 2 and Level 3 vocabulary lists for Vagahau Niue and Gagana Tokelau will help teachers create assessment materials for internally assessed Unit Standards.
Teachers should ensure the revised standards and supporting materials are used for assessment in 2025.
Publication of updated GenAI resources for schools and teachers
The Ministry has published updated guidance and resources on generative AI in NCEA. The Ministry’s webpage has been updated with assessment- and NCEA-specific content, including pdfs of Frequently Asked Questions and Case Studies: Generative AI - Ministry of Education. There is also a link to this page from the NCEA.Ed website: Generative AI in NCEA assessment | NCEA.
The following sections are relevant to NCEA assessment:
- GenAI in NCEA
- Frequently asked questions about GenAI in NCEA assessment
- GenAI case studies
